UK Visa Policy Update: What Changed for Filipino Applicants

What This Means for Your Application

If your Graduate Route application is submitted before 1 January 2027, this change doesn’t touch you — you’re assessed under the current rules and you’ll get the full 2-year leave. The new 18-month duration only applies to Graduate Route applications filed on or after 1 January 2027, regardless of when you finish your course or when your Student visa expires.

For Filipino students planning a UK intake, the practical effect depends on your timeline. If you’re finishing a course and applying for the Graduate Route any time before the 1 January 2027 cutoff, budget and plan around the current 2-year window. If your Graduate Route application will land on or after that date — for example, if you’re only starting a UK course in 2026 and won’t graduate and switch until 2027 or later — plan your post-study job search and any onward visa route (such as a Skilled Worker sponsorship) around an 18-month runway instead of 2 years.

This is one part of a wider package in the same Statement of Changes. It’s not the lead story here, but worth knowing: from 8 January 2026, the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual, and Scale-up routes raise the minimum English requirement from B1 to B2 for new applicants, and from 25 November 2025, international students who complete their course can switch into the Innovator Founder route. Neither of those changes affects the Graduate Route duration itself.

Who This Affects

• Affected: Any Student visa holder who submits a standard Graduate Route application on or after 1 January 2027 — your leave will be 18 months, not 2 years.
• Not affected — current Graduate visa holders: if you already hold a Graduate Route visa, your existing 2-year duration is unchanged.
• Not affected — applicants before the cutoff: if you submit your Graduate Route application before 1 January 2027, you still get the full 2 years, even if your leave runs past that date.
• Not affected — PhD/doctoral graduates: the Doctoral Extension track within the Graduate Route stays at 3 years, with no change.
